Volunteers still needed for both the Expo and race day
AKRON, Ohio (Sept. 16, 2014) – Talk about coming in under the wire. The Akron Marathon, presented by Time Warner Cable, announced today that the team relay presented by Novo Nordisk officially sold out – with 1,300 five-person teams having registered prior to Monday (Sept. 15) evening’s deadline. According to Running USA, Akron Marathon’s team relay is currently ranked as the largest 5-person relay in the country.
In addition, fewer than 300 spots remain in the full marathon and less than 100 are left for the half marathon. Registration for those events closes Sunday, Sept. 21 at 11:59 p.m.
“We continue to be amazed by the support of the runners in Akron and across the region,” said Akron Marathon Executive Director Anne Bitong. “We built this race around providing a world-class experience to the running community and the continued growth of all of our events indicates that we must be doing something right.”
The marathon is also looking for additional volunteers for both the Health & Fitness Expo Friday, Sept. 26 at the John S. Knight Center, as well as for the following day’s race. Opportunities include assisting with registration at the Expo, finish line runner support, helping with the kids fun run and serving as a recycling steward, among others. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to sign-up online at http://www.doitsports.com/volunteer2/jobs-by-date.tcl?event_id=200609.
The Akron Marathon, which consists of four events including the full and half marathon, the five-person team relay and the kids fun run, has grown by more than 10,000 participants since the inaugural event in 2003. The Marathon offers the community a health-focused, fun-filled occasion that draws thousands of participants and spectators each year. The 12th annual event will be held Sept. 27, 2014. Registration is available at www.akronmarathon.org.
