AKRON, O.H. (Aug. 27, 2024) – The Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation is proud to announce that Bret Treier, a long-time volunteer, original course designer, and Board Emeritus, has been named the 2024 Ambassador Award Recipient. Treier will be honored at the Akron Marathon’s annual VIP Party on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, at House Three Thirty.
Bret Treier has been an integral part of the Akron Marathon since its inception. As one of the original course designers, his vision helped shape the event into the celebrated race it is today. Over the years, Treier has devoted countless hours to volunteering and contributing to the growth and success of the event, serving as course co-chair, board member, and chair. Under his guidance, the event has grown from 3,000 to 12,000 participants across three events, yielding an economic impact of $6 million annually. Treier has witnessed over 188,000 blue liners cross the finish line. His dedication and passion for the Akron Marathon have made a lasting impact on the community and the organization itself.
In addition to his contributions to the Akron Marathon, Bret is a seasoned runner in his own right. He has completed more than 60 marathons and ultra marathons, including 12 Boston Marathons. Included in that number are many blue line practice runs with race organizers over the years to check course conditions in real time. He has also competed in dozens of distance relays including Hood to Coast, the Bourbon Chase, and our local Burning River. Before getting involved in our Akron Marathon, Bret helped organize many local races and community events, including the Canal Park 5k, the YMCA Triathlon, and the YMCA Jack-O-Lantern Jog. He also is proud to have organized the very first Relay for Life in Ohio for the American Cancer Society. This list is not comprehensive but stands to showcase his personal commitment to the sport and the running community.
“We are thrilled to honor Bret Treier with the 2024 Ambassador Award,” said Steve and Jeannine Marks, race founders. “His contributions to the Akron Marathon and his unwavering commitment to our mission have been invaluable. Bret’s dedication to the running community exemplifies the spirit of the Akron Marathon.”
The Ambassador Award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions and lasting impact on the sport of running. This award honors those who inspire others to run through their commitment and enthusiasm. This year, Treier will be honored as the 2024 Ambassador Award Recipient during the race weekend.
The Akron Marathon, now in its 22nd year, continues to be a premier event that attracts participants from across the nation. The race weekend includes the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon, Team Relay, and The Mandel Family Kids Fun Run presented by Akron Children’s Hospital, providing opportunities for runners of all ages and abilities to participate.
