Organization once again aiming for certification from the Council for Responsible Sport
AKRON, Ohio (Sept. 17, 2014) – The Akron Marathon, presented by Time Warner Cable, is once again poised to earn certification from the Council for Responsible Sport for its efforts to create a socially and environmentally responsible event. The ongoing effort to further “green” the event touches everyone involved.
“Attaining certification from the Council for Responsible Sport is a distinction we take great pride in,” said Akron Marathon Executive Director Anne Bitong. “It’s very important to not only make the event more sustainable, but to involve our participants, volunteers, sponsors and fans in the effort.”
This year, the Akron Marathon is attempting to reach gold certification, which is a higher level than the organization has received in the past. Reaching this level of certification requires an extensive plan to execute, document, and promote recycling efforts throughout all aspects of the sporting event.
Included in the Akron Marathon’s initiatives have been an increase in recycling along the course, improved Finish Line recycling stations, creating new composting stations and encouraging carpooling or using the Akron Metro RTA to help reduce air pollution during race weekend.
In 2013, the Akron Marathon’s Environmental Endurance efforts resulted in recycling 5.35 tons of material (nearly 80% of all waste was diverted from the landfill), offering a free event for children educating them on health and fitness, donating 2,813 pounds of food after the race and much more. Anyone interested in participating as a Recycle Steward can sign-up online at http://www.doitsports.com/volunteer2/jobs-by-date.tcl?event_id=200609.
The Akron Marathon, which consists of four events including the full and half marathon, the five-person team relay and the kids fun run, has grown by more than 10,000 participants since the inaugural event in 2003. The Marathon offers the community a health-focused, fun-filled occasion that draws thousands of participants and spectators each year. The 12th annual event will be held Sept. 27, 2014.
